Trauma Therapy with EMDR
What is Trauma?
Trauma isn’t just what happened—it’s what your body couldn’t process at the time. When an experience is too much, too soon, or too fast, the nervous system can become overwhelmed and stuck in protective responses like freeze, shutdown, fawn, or collapse.
Even long after the event, your body may continue to respond as if the danger is still happening.
Common Sources of Trauma:
Childhood abuse or neglect
Car accidents or sudden injuries
Medical procedures or birth trauma
Natural disasters
Systemic oppression or racial trauma
Signs of Unresolved Trauma:
Chronic tension, pain, or bracing
Emotional outbursts or numbness
Flashbacks, dissociation, or shutdown
Overthinking, rumination, or self-blame
Feeling disconnected, helpless, or unworthy
Procrastination, low motivation, or relational conflict
The Impact of Trauma
Research demonstrates that trauma affects your overall health, and can increase your chances of chronic diseases and terminal illness, if left untreated. Additionally, trauma affect your work life, get in the way of your creative expression, and can contribute to communication issues or conflict in relationships. Investment & Info
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a therapy modality that uses specific standard protocols to help the individual process anxieties, traumas, and grief. It invites the client to briefly focus on the trauma memory, while simultaneously engaging in bilateral stimulation (tapping left right or typically eye movements), which is associated with reduction of the triggering emotion and trauma memories.
As an integrative approach, it involves minimal talk therapy (than traditional psychotherapy modalities), and the use of bi-lateral stimulation helps to reprogram the activating event. Length of treatment will vary by individual and the impact of the trauma memory in the mind or body. Learn more at emdria.org.
